Hi everyone, and welcome to my little corner of popcorn.
I’m Kai, an apprentice working here to help with the marketing side of the company. I’ll be making regular posts about what I get up to and how it’s going for us. I’m hoping this might be an enlightening series for anyone interested in what a marketing apprentice might experience, whether you’re an employer considering hiring apprentices or a possible apprentice yourself.
As I’m at the very start of my career, I’ve been interested in documenting my progress: for popcorn, but also for myself as a professional. This is a diary for my growth as a working person, and I’m excited to see where it goes.
My expectations coming into the job were mostly to learn a lot, and particularly to learn about business. As my background is in creative writing, with only the typical amount of experience for a young person, I hadn’t yet been in contact with that side of the working world. I really wanted to know more about how businesses work, to learn invaluable industry knowledge and push myself into daunting experiences to build up my confidence. All in all, high hopes!
What Has Working Been Like?
I’ve been in the job for six months so far, and it’s been quite unlike anything I really expected.
The pandemic has been a major factor in what I’ve been able to access. My workspace is just my desk in my bedroom; still in my student house, there’s not enough room for an office for one, never mind for six. Like many of us, I’ve worked from home the entire time, conducting Zoom meetings with my bed in the background. While I’ve appreciated not having a commute, I am yet to step inside the office and this is one of my great aspirations of the coming year.
Technology has thus been a boon for us. Daily Zoom meetings, shared drives, internet lessons. I’ve been learning and working through a screen; it makes me appreciate how vital technology has been for this pandemic. Accessing webinars and seminars have been enlightening, and the learning curve for my knowledge has been steep. I feel as if I’ve come on in leaps and bounds, which helps my confidence too.
I’ve particularly appreciated how my job roles puts creativity first and foremost. I’ve been holding the fort when it comes to the blog (another great way for me to learn about the sector), by writing articles weekly if not daily. Contributing to the redesign of the popcorn website has been one of my favourite roles, as well producing graphics for our revived social media accounts.
Right now, I’m concentrating on SEO, a key aspect of digital marketing. This is where my article writing has come in handy, too, but most of the work is invisible. Starting to see some progress on our SEO has been heartening. Knowing you’ve worked hard is one thing; seeing the result is something else.
My focus is on back linking this week. I’ve been delving into research about this for the past few weeks, discovering what it is and why it is so vital for websites. Working on back linking means plenty of article writing, which I’m looking forward to!
